Car Insurance Wheel is an independent editorial website about owning and running a vehicle in the United Kingdom. We write about the things that cost drivers money and worry, in the order they meet them: the insurance they are required to buy, the tax and charges the government levies, the annual test, the maintenance that keeps a car or motorcycle safe, and the rules of the road that decide whether a mistake costs points or a licence.
What we are, and what we are not
We are a publisher. We are not an insurer, a broker, a comparison site or a garage, and we are not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We do not sell or arrange insurance, we do not take commission from insurers for sending them customers, and no company pays to be mentioned in a guide. When a guide names a type of product, it is because the rules around that product matter to the reader, not because anyone is selling it.
Nothing on this site is personal financial, insurance or legal advice. A guide can tell you how the no-claims discount works in general; only your own policy wording can tell you how yours works, and only a regulated adviser can tell you what to buy. Where the honest answer to a question is "check your policy" or "ask your insurer", we say so.
How we work
Every guide is built from primary sources first: the legislation, GOV.UK guidance, the DVLA and DVSA, the FCA's rules and policy statements, Transport for London and the city councils that run clean-air zones, and the policy wordings insurers publish. Trade bodies, the Motor Ombudsman, the Financial Ombudsman Service and reputable consumer organisations come next. We do not build guides from other websites' guides.
Figures are dated. A tax rate, a charge or a fee is stated with the year it applies to, because most of them change every April, and a guide that says "£195" without saying when is already wrong somewhere. When the rules differ between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the guide says which applies.
Guides are reviewed when the rules move and at least once a year. The date at the top of each guide is the date it was last checked, not the date it was first written. If we get something wrong, we correct it in the guide and note the correction; we do not quietly overwrite.
Who writes the guides
The guides are written and checked by a small editorial team based in the UK with backgrounds in motoring journalism, insurance claims handling and vehicle maintenance. We publish under the site name rather than individual bylines. Questions about a specific guide, requests for a correction and suggestions for what to cover next all reach the same inbox through the contact page, and reader questions are the main way we decide what to write.
Advertising, links and privacy
The site is not currently funded by advertising or affiliate commission. Links to other websites, including those in the footer, are provided as references or as sites we consider useful; a link is not an endorsement of any product. We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how the site is read, and the details are in the privacy policy. The terms of use set out the limits of what we are responsible for.
Corrections
If a rule, a rate or a date in a guide is wrong or out of date, please tell us through the contact form with the guide's title and, if you have it, the source. Corrections to factual errors are made within a few days of being verified.
